- About the Author -
Interested in space travel and astronomy from an early age, and fueled heavily by Carl Sagan’s Cosmos in 1980, my love of science fiction started during childhood with the original Star Trek and Dr Who. Other shows such as UFO and Space 1999 captured my imagination further, but it was after the release of Star Wars in 1977 that I began to look at a broader range of science and fiction and ponder the question 'What if...?' The result is a thrilling trilogy that promises to keep the reader awake pondering the possibilities long after the final page has been turned.

Check out this brand new book - the latest from my very good buddy and old college pal David Jowsey.
I had the privilege of proof-reading it for him and it's an absolute belter of a story. Set in World War 2 and weaving together action with a hint of the supernatural, this immersive tale is steeped in history, atmosphere and authentic description. Highly recommended! - John |
Loved this book so much I read it twice.
What a twist... Wasn't expecting that. - Vanda |
Although I dont usually read books set around the war I'm really loving this book. It is genuinely interesting and I love how the author make us truly care about the kids and empathise with them. I have to admit I HATE Mrs Barnforth, but I do kind of pity her own children for living with such an insufferable woman.

I liked the concept, it was an interesting read and I really enjoyed it. The characters were the right mix of relatable whilst unique and the story flowed nicely. It was easy to get lost in reading.

Wow. I love the children looking up at the planes. It brings back so many memories of when I was about four years old and used to play in the garden of the house where we lived in Leeds. I would sit on my swing and watch the planes do what I thought were acrobatics, when in actual fact they were fighting.

Summer 2006
Set in England and told through the eyes of ten year old Tom Richards, Dragons in the Sky weaves together the crash of a mysterious object at Roswell in 1947 with a strange shadowy figure, and the rich local history of the Cleveland Hills. On a blisteringly hot summer holiday, Tom's world is turned upside down as an incoherent figure stumbles into his garden. He is Danny, a long-lost childhood friend of his father. When Danny begins revealing the story of his youth, Tom's family is forced into an experience none of them could have imagined. Visited by strange beings and terrified beyond their worst nightmares, the family struggles to come to terms with the visions they have witnessed. As events start to unfold, Tom will realise he has a very important role to play. |

- Illustrations -
Each piece of internal artwork was first penciled out, then inked and shaded in. Some pieces required a once-and-its-done approach, others took two or even three drafts until the desired image was achieved. All in all, each set of illustrations took six weeks to compete while the cover paintings took twelve hours each.

As a child I was always drawing. My favourite place was on the floor by the television, pens and pencils spread around me. I drew everything from pirate ships to fire engines, and was even sent a letter and Blue Peter badge by Biddy Baxter for my picture of the Trumpton fire engine, which I sent off when I was about six!
Then came Star Trek, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, and I was hooked. I began to use Rotring pens – finely-nibbed draughtsmen’s equipment – which enabled me to produce detailed pen and wash illustrations. I tried to produce my own comic strip of Battlestar Galactica but didn’t finish it as it was simply far too large an undertaking, but the designs of Star Wars was where my heart really lay. I drew X-Wings fighters, TIE fighters and Darth Vader, and I’m pleased to say I can still draw them to this day! |
I found a wealth of valuable information in comic strips, and if you want to learn how to draw explosions, drifting smoke and figures in motion, then check out a range of comics. With the rise in the number of graphic novels on the market over the past few years there’s no shortage of material to dip into. It’s all there. Just study how the artists have done it, develop your own version and practice.
South Park 6th Form College took me in a whole new direction. I learnt how to apply colour in ways I hadn’t previously understood and began to view subjects in greater detail. I was taught by John Carter and he taught me well. He showed me the value of self-criticism, and although I felt he was hard on me at times I came to understand that you have to see the flaws in your own work, understanding what doesn’t work a well as what does work, in order to improve. But improve I did, and I thank him for it. |
By this time my work was quite detailed, but Bretton Hall brought me up with a jolt. I drew and painted in ways which at first seemed quite alien - working one drawing on top of another, drawing whilst standing in a barn in the dead of winter, my hands so cold and blue I couldn’t hold the charcoal I was working in, and studying subject matter I hadn’t even dreamt of exploring, but I developed a more rounded approach to art and my style became more abstract and loose. I dabbled in sculpture and photography, played with glass and plaster and came across Andy Goldsworthy, Henry Moore and Robert Scriven, sculptors who took art in new and exciting directions and it was all fantastic. But through it all I longed to work in fine detail, and when I returned home after four years away, that was what I did.

'An approachable and uplifting story of life with Tourette's Syndrome'
- www.tourettes-action.org.uk Growing up with a condition I knew nothing about, I was confused. Doctors called it Tourette's Syndrome, others called it a twitch, but what did that mean, and why did I find myself compelled to utter strange sounds and make jerking movements that drew unwanted attention? What was happening to my childhood, and would these unwelcome episodes ever go away? For years, Tourette's Syndrome was a dark stain on my life, but over time I realised it had grown into something far more helpful than I could ever have imagined; something which was about to take my life along unexpected and unfamiliar paths, leaving me more fulfilled than I had ever thought possible WHATEVER HAPPENED TO TWITCH MORGAN? is an honest, heart-warming and often humorous record of life and achievement with Tourette's Syndrome, and proof that in many cases the condition is not something to hold back success and happiness. |
If you find yourself with Tourette's Syndrome, know someone with the condition or simply want to know more, then this book is for you.

'The book is excellent and would provide a great source of information and support to anyone interested in knowing more about Tourette's. I found the read very absorbing. . . and I think you have the level of medical information just about right, so that anyone can understand the information you are giving. I was privileged to be asked to design and paint the cover art for Firestorm Rising and Firestorm 2: The Teardrop of Ice by John Clewarth, a story of excitement and dark deeds as three teenage friends struggle against the power of an unearthly force.
Firstorm Rising was John's debut horror novel, and is a long-time friend from my Bretton Hall College days.
I also painted the cover art for John's novel Demons in the Dark.
